The Newcastle number 9 shirt has special powers among the legions of the Toon support, but not everyone can handle it.
Many have worn it, some with more success than others, but down the post war years three men have made the black and white number 9 shirt legendary.
Alan Shearer is one, Jackie Milburn another and Real Radios Malcolm MacDonald the third.
At the height of his powers Supermac was knocking goals in at St James for fun, equally adept with left foot, right foot or head.
For 5 consecutive seasons in the 70s he was the Toons top scorer , on three occasions was the old First Divisions top scorer and has a goals to games ratio second only to the great Jimmy Greaves. Add to that a blistering Superstars 100m time of 10.4 seconds, a time that would have qualified Supermac for the British Olympic team and you begin to realize just how formidable a number 9 Supermac really was. A seasoned manager with Fulham and Huddersfield Town, Malcolm knows the game inside out, he’s passionate about Newcastle United, but doesn’t suffer fools.
