Parents Websafe Survey findings

Are your children safe online?
Are your children safe online?

Real Radio asked parents to fill in a survey about their children’s internet safety.

This is what we found...

  • 96% of children are accessing the internet from home
  • Almost ½ (48%) have access to the internet in their bedroom
  • More than a third of parents (34%) feel that they don’t have enough knowledge to teach their child about internet safety.
  • 12% of parents felt their children were unsafe whilst online, and a further 26% were unsure.
  • More than two-fifths of parents (42%) don’t have any form of parental lock or content filter on their computers. Just 10% have a parental lock, 16% have a content filter and 32% have both.
  • However, almost two-fifths (38%) don’t believe their parental lock/content filter is secure enough, and a further 39% don’t know whether it’s secure or not.
  • 8 in 10 parents have a social networking account… Facebook is the most popular with 68% of parents having a Facebook account.
  • More than ½ of parents (54%) are friends with their child on at least one of these accounts.
  • Most parents knew their LOL from their BRB’s, (99% of parents knew what LOL meant, and 75% of parents know what BRB stands for), but less than 2 in 10 knew what PIR, POS or PAW meant.
  • 15% of parents say that their child has suffered abuse online, whilst a further 13% didn’t know.
  • A quarter of parents say their child has logged onto an adult website (either deliberately or by mistake), and a further 26% didn’t know.
  • Just 4 in 10 parents always supervise their child when they’re online, although more than half (53%) have snooped on their child’s email or social networking account to see what they’re up to – and 7 in 10 agree that this is justified.
