Officers are investigating a suspected arson attack at a block of flats in South Shields.

Just after 7am on Thursday 18th March a wheelie bin was set alight in the stairwell leading to homes in Anderson Street.

The first caused smoke and heat damage to the four properties.

A 64 year old man's being treated for a broken leg and two young girls are receiving treatment for a broken angle.

Two adults and four young children were taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.

Detectives are asking anyone with any information to contact them.

Detective Constable Paul Feeley said: "Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured as a result of this incident but it could have had far more serious consequences.

"We are carrying out extensive enquiries to trace the person responsible for this offence and would appeal for the public's help."
